Welcome to the first edition of Diva Digest, the place where we step away from the battles, events, and chaos to get to know the divas who make this community ABSOLUTELY iconic.
Today, we’re exploring something every person on Earth has:
a hill they’re willing to defend forever.
Whether it’s arguing that pineapple belongs on pizza, claiming a certain movie is secretly a masterpiece, or insisting that one celebrity (or soccer player, to be topical) is completely overrated… us humans absolutely LOVE having opinions.
And you know what? Surprisingly, some scientists have actually studied a bit into why we do this.
DID YOU KNOW?
Psychologists call this the “belief perseverance effect,” this being the tendency for people to hold onto their opinions even after hearing information that challenges them. Essentially what is going on here is that; once your brain decides “I am right” it becomes way harder to convince it otherwise.
But sometimes, a “hill to die on” isn’t about being right! It’s about personality, memories, and what makes you, well… you!
For example:
– Plenty of Star Wars fans will passionately debate which trilogy is the best (and sometimes whether the newer movies deserve the hate).
– Taylor Swift fans have famously debated everything from her songwriting to her album rankings, to her environmental impact!
– And you know what, someone out there is fighting that milk goes in the bowl before the cereal…
The question isn’t always “Is your opinion correct?”
Sometimes it’s:
“How much are you willing to defend it?”
Now that we’ve established that everyone has strong opinions… let’s see what our featured Diva Warrior has to say on this topic!
Meet This Week’s Diva Warrior:
AMARA
Hi Amara! Could you tell me, what’s one hill you’ll die on?
Amara: “Volleyball is the best sport.”
I love volleyball as well! But, what makes volleyball the best sport in your eyes?
Amara: “Because it’s so much fun! My favourite part about it is when I get to spike the ball, hehe!”
Can’t argue with you there Amara! There’s something so absolutely satisfying about launching a volleyball across the court, and we can’t even blame you for loving that dramatic spike moment! One perfect hit can make the whole game worth it!
Second question! What’s an opinion you have that gets you the craziest look?
Amara: “Nothing really.”
A rare sighting: a Diva Warrior without a controversial opinion?! Are you naturally easygoing, or are you just good at avoiding debates?
Amara: “I’m easygoing.”
Honestly, that checks out. I think everyone reading this knows that you’re DW’s sweetheart! Witnessing the chaos rather than partaking in it!
Third question! What’s a trend or meme you just don’t get?
Amara: “The 67 meme.”
Woah! Some people might not like this opinion! Haha! Okay, this is totally fair! What is a meme that you love then?
Amara: “The 23 meme we made in DW!”
We love this meme too, Amara! It’s absooooolutely iconic! A true diva warrior classic!
Fourth question! What is something everyone loves that you don’t really get the hype around?
Amara: The World Cup, because I don’t really watch it.”
That’s a brave answer especially with how many sports fans there are in DW! It makes sense though if you love volleyball more! What about the half time show performance for the finale? Justin Bieber, Shakira and BTS performed. Were you interested in that?!
Amara: No, I wasn’t interested in it.”
Respect, girl. Our Diva knows what she likes!
Okay Amara. Our final question! What’s something you love that most people don’t?
Amara: I love peoples’ personalities.
This is an incredibly important and overlooked answer! At the end of the day, it’s not just what someone does that makes them memorable, it’s who they are! And you get that! What personality traits do you admire most in someone?
Amara: Kindness, compassion, and courage.
